Getting Ready for Your Eye Examination

Thank you for choosing Eyesight Optometrist!

Before your upcoming appointment, here are a few things you can prepare beforehand.

YOUR CONCERNS

Be ready to notify the optometrist of any visual concerns you are having. We will commonly ask about whether you are experiencing any blurry vision, pain, redness, flashes, floaters and headaches. Also note your ocular history such as any previous eye injuries or surgeries and any family history of ocular conditions.

WHAT TO BRING
  • Any current or previous spectacles or contact lenses you may be wearing. This will help us determine if there were any visual changes on the day of testing. It will also help the optometrist prescribe glasses you will easily adapt to and best avoid discomfort for any new lens prescription given.
  • Medicare card and Health fund card. Bringing these cards along will cover for your eye test and do on the spot claims for private health funds if you purchase any glasses or contact lenses.
  • Driver’s License: If you are coming for a NSW Fitness to drive vision assessment, we will need your driver's license details to complete the Transport NSW forms online through the MyHealthLink portal.
  • Any current eye drops you have been using.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

Eye examination usually takes 15-30 minutes, depending whether extra testing is indicated on the day. If you are doing a dilated eye examination it may take up to 45 minutes.

DILATED EYE EXAMINATION

If you are coming for a comprehensive diabetic eye examination, your eyes will be dilated. There are other indications where you may need a dilated examination which your optometrist will discuss with you. These may involve if you have small pupils, if you are highly myopic (shortsighted) or experience any flashes or floaters.

A dilated eye examination involves inserting eye drops within your eyes that dilate your pupils. This allows your optometrist to check the peripheral areas of your retina for any abnormalities. If you require a dilated eye examination, eye drops will be inserted within your eyes which will take around 30 minutes to take effect. Please notify your optometrist if you have any allergies to eye drops.

It will cause blurry vision, especially at near and increase light sensitivity for 4-6 hours. It is recommended to organise someone to drive you or take public transport, as it is not recommended to drive following dilation.

Having a routine eye examination every year is recommended to ensure your eyes are healthy and stay healthy.

We at Eyesight Optometrist strive to maintain great vision for your lifestyle.
